FAQ’s
Who is it for?
Introductory diving welcomes complete beginners and uncertified divers. It isn’t about earning a qualification but about enjoying the experience. Anyone aged 11 and older can try diving if they’re physically fit. A doctor’s approval is advisable if you take prescription medication or have ongoing medical conditions.
Introductory, Resort or Discovery Dive?
Different companies may use various terms for introductory diving, such as Resort, Discovery, or Intro, but they all refer to the same experience.
Is it safe?
Absolutely! For first-time divers, Introductory Diving is an excellent way to ease into the sport without any pressure, backed by plenty of support. You’ll receive close supervision as you familiarise yourself with the scuba diving equipment and safety procedures, all while exploring the stunning Great Barrier Reef. There’s no pressure, no tests, and no rush—just the chance to dive at your own pace.
Who will I be diving with?
Intro Dives are led by experienced instructors who are certified by PADI or SSI. In Queensland, the standard practice is maintaining a group ratio of one instructor for every four introductory divers. If you’re travelling with certified friends, they cannot take you diving unless they are instructors employed by the vessel. However, they are welcome to join you and the other introductory divers.
What will I see?
Contrary to popular belief, some of the most beautiful marine life can be found within the first 10 metres. Coral is drawn to sunlight, and where there’s abundant coral, you’ll find a rich variety of marine life. As introductory divers, your maximum depth will be 10 metres, depending on the vessel, giving you plenty of opportunities to encounter incredible marine life.
I loved it! I want to get certified! 🎉
That’s fantastic! If you enjoyed your intro dive, consider getting certified. An Open Water Certification is your next step into the diving world. It builds on the skills you learned during your intro dive and covers much more. Liveaboards are the best way to obtain your certification. The best part? Once you’re certified, it lasts a lifetime!
