Choosing the Right Liveaboard for You
When selecting your trip, consider the following factors:
Flexibility with Dates 📅
Are your travel dates flexible or strict? Some vessels offer flexible daily departures, while others have set dates. Knowing this can help you narrow down your options.
Diving Level 🐬
What diving experience is best suited for this trip? Most liveaboards cater to divers of all levels, including snorkelers. However, some trips may recommend more advanced diving skills to participate in particular dives.
Guided or Unguided Diving 👉
Most diving trips in Australia do not include a guide. Certified divers are trusted to dive unguided with a buddy, who could be a travel companion, a fellow diver on the trip, or even a crew member if no one else is available. If you prefer guided dives, you can select that option during the booking process or inquire on board. Each vessel has its own rates for guide services.
Need to brush up on your skills? 🤿
If you’re returning to diving after an extended break, taking a refresher course on board is a smart choice. It can help boost your confidence and skills. Additionally, having a guide during your dives can enhance your experience by providing valuable insights into the dive sites and ensuring your safety.
Budget 💸
We offer a range of liveaboards to accommodate various price ranges, so you can choose one that best suits your budget. For those who are budget-conscious, Reef Encounter has a volunteer program to squeeze in a few more dives. Contact us directly to learn more!
Departure Locations and Times 📍
Ensure you arrive at the correct location on time for departure! The last thing you want is to miss out on your trip. If you’re flying in, it’s advisable to book your trip for the following day to allow for any potential delays or cancellations. Also, remember the 24-hour rule for flying after diving!
Dive Medicals ⚕️
Each boat requires you to complete a medical form. It is crucial to fill out these forms honestly for first-time divers, those taking a course, or individuals with known medical conditions or who are taking medication. If necessary, obtain a doctor’s clearance to ensure your safety during the trip. Medical certificates are only valid within 90 days of the travel date.
Travel Insurance🛡️
Always secure comprehensive travel insurance. Disruptions and cancellations can occur, especially during the wet season, so make sure you’re fully covered in case of unforeseen events.
What to pack 🧳
How much luggage you bring can depend on the length of your trip. Keep in mind that cabins can be smaller in size, so it’s best advised to keep your packing to these essentials;
- Swimwear
- Casual clothes
- Toiletries
- Sunglasses
- Hat
- Refillable Water Bottle
- Wallet with cash and cards
- Slip off shoes eg. sandals or flip flops. (The majority of vessels require you to be barefoot whilst on board for safety reasons)
Whilst you are more than welcome to bring on your own dive gear, if luggage weights restrict you from doing so, fear not, as many companies can provide you with gear either for an additional fee or included in your trip.
☀️Don’t forget to Slip, Slop, Slap! Sun Safety is an absolute must out on the ocean. Even on cool and cloudy days, the sun can still burn you, so make sure you have proper sun protection. When bringing sunscreen, please make sure it is reef-safe.
